Shay Spaniola is a Michigan based contemporary artist whose layered botanical abstractions explore color, movement, and the beauty of the unexpected. Drawing from her background in painting and textile design, her work brings together gestural floral forms, rich color relationships, and intricate layers that unfold organically across the canvas.

Her process is intuitive and exploratory, allowing compositions to develop through repetition, overlapping forms, and spontaneous mark-making. The resulting paintings exist somewhere between abstraction and botanical imagery, evoking the rhythm of patterned textiles and the atmosphere of an overgrown garden.

A graduate of the University of Michigan with a BFA in Painting and Photography, Spaniola spent much of her early career traveling internationally as a photographer and creative producer. She later founded Bunglo, a textile and home furnishings company whose designs were carried by more than 300 retailers, including Anthropologie, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, and West Elm. The company was acquired in 2024.

Alongside her painting practice, Spaniola is the founder of Marigold Branding, a boutique creative studio specializing in branding and visual identity for wellness businesses.

Her creative work has been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens, HGTV, and Martha Stewart Living.

Spaniola lives and works in Birmingham, Michigan, where she continues to explore the intersection of painting, pattern, and color.
